Lightweight, rollable futons - foldable futons

What characterises rollable futons?

The materials from which we manufacture high-quality futons are good, strong natural materials, which accordingly can only be compressed to a limited extent. Ergo, a thick / strong futon mattress cannot be rolled. Futons up to approx. 10cm thick can usually be rolled.
A rollable futon must therefore be thin. Conversely, this also means that it is hard to lie on. To endure this hardness in the long run, I have to move, loosen or roll up the futon frequently if it is filled with natural fibres.

Rolling up the futon or better folding it?

Rolling up has become so established in linguistic usage because most people assume the typical process of rolling up, which is also reinforced by the term futon mat, because mats are usually rolled. A futon, as the Japanese call it (futon: cloth body), is rather folded, which is indeed easier and more practical, as everyday use shows.

Folding has several advantages:
• First, it is faster and easier to handle than rolling.
• Then, a folded futon lies as you lay it, whereas a rolled-up futon wants to be fixed somehow to avoid unrolling; so it leans against the wall or, in stronger models, it needs a strap to fix it.
• Ultimately, you can also sit comfortably on a folded futon without harming the material.

The very thin futons, which are also easy to roll, are also easily quadruple folded.
The slightly stronger models can be triple folded, which is also very easy and
the strong ones, the full-sized futon mattresses are simply folded, bent in the middle, just as we supply them, and thus become good seat cushions.

Another way to fold is into a sofa shape, where one third folds under and one third rises up in the other direction as a backrest. Leaning against the wall, this is a makeshift sofa ... with our relax sofa frame, a classic futon sofa is created in this way.

What is the point of lightweight, rollable / foldable futons?

The origin of lightweight, rollable or foldable futons certainly lies in the original, Japanese futon. There, futon has an old tradition, which in a very tradition-conscious country is associated with many rituals and a certain mindset / mentality that underlies it all. And because this tradition and the attitude that goes with it have very little to do with Germany and German tradition / mentality, the classic Japanese futon is out of place in typical German sleeping use.
What led to the futon in Germany (as previously in the USA and England) was, on the one hand, a turn to the natural materials used, such as the desire for lightness and clarity (which in bed has a lot to do with stability, after mattresses in our country became increasingly soft and unsupportable), as well as a certain transfiguration of Japanese culture that began in the 1980s.
The discrepancy between the desire for new clarity and German sleeping habits gave rise to our Euro-Futons, modern, species-appropriate futon mattresses that are oriented towards people's real needs. In Japan, on the other hand, there are fewer and fewer classic Japanese futons in real life. Rather, typical European mattresses are increasingly taking over the market. An opposite trend to ours.

But all this in no way takes away from the justification for light, rollable or foldable futons. Many light people, who also sleep in a prone or supine position, enjoy the compact feeling of lying on a TWIN futon, which of course lies best on the floor or on tatamis, just on an even surface.
Doubling, i.e. placing two light futons on top of each other (hence the name TWIN Futon) is not a European invention. The old, traditional Japanese also used to lay two futons on top of each other if they couldn't cope with the hardness.

Multiple uses ...

• The night's sleep that is just so right for some people on thin and thus hard single mats.
• The more comfortable night's sleep on two TWIN futons, which can then still be rolled or folded individually.
• Taking a stable, lightweight Zen Futon rolled or folded in the car, for overnight stays on the road or in the camper van / boat, where inferior foam mats are usually found.
• The all-round use at home, for relaxing, reading or for guests.
• The use as a perfect massage mat for Shiatsu massage, Thai massage, Tantra massage or other relaxing massages.
This is the fine advantage of lightweight, rollable or foldable futons: Easy handling, combined with high-quality materials and good workmanship, creates a wide range of applications.

A cotton futon / fibre futon needs care.

The classic Japanese futon is filled with cotton, a particularly strong, long-staple cotton that is combed and laminated by master hand. There is no such thing here because there is no awareness of paying the price. Local light, rollable futons are made of upholstery fleece, usually cotton, virgin wool, horsehair and coconut fibre.
This is what our Zen futons are made of.
These fibres compress increasingly over time, especially when exposed to moisture. Moisture is always an issue in the sleeping area, especially when a thin mat is lying on the floor or a closed surface. Condensation occurs. In winter more than in summer. This moisture has to come out because it makes the fibres stick together. Rolling up, especially shaking, loosens the fibres and allows the inside to dry. A fibre futon, especially one made of pure cotton, needs the occasional sunbath. The UV rays dry and eliminate bacteria.

Futons, even lightweight, rollable futons with a firm natural latex core, like our Yasumi futons hardly need it. They should also be turned frequently when you lie on the floor because of condensation moisture (to avoid mould), but the consistency remains stable in the long run.
