Bed Pallet - The development of pallet as home furniture
"Some things just take more time than expected. The pallet is my personal prototype for an applied waste of time. Since 1987 I am recommending to people, who have too little money for a designer’s bed,
to buy euro pallets, process them with color and/or fabric, and rather invest the money in a good futon. Because that is what you have to give to those things, in terms of function, they build a perfect slatted frame bed.
Then, in the middle of the 90s, the thought of building an own rational dimensioned pallet furniture came through. Because what always bothered me was the uncleanliness of the material (origin, chemical treatment),
as well as the measurements and the weight of the famous original. Too big, too heave, too grubby. There was a need for pallet furniture that is clean, light, and handy. But it wasn’t until 2005 that sketches
came about and the measurements were set in a street cafe in Kreuzberg: euro pallet reduced to 99 cm x 66 cm x 11,5 cm - made from solid beech, and there it is, the home pallet. That it would take eight
more years until I would have the outline built, and additional two years until I had the time to take pictures of the constructs and put them on the website, wasn’t planned :-)
In November 2015 when already half the world knew pallet furniture, the first pictures are available.
But I am still happy, even though it took some time. (Dietmar Wagner, founder of Futonwerk)
